How to read HS codes, weights and declared values

An HS code classifies goods; it is not a product model. Compare descriptions, dates, currencies and quantity units together. Value divided by quantity is useful only when specifications and measurement bases are comparable, and it is not a current market quote.

Read the code alongside the description

The World Customs Organization's HS identifies commodity groups with six-digit codes. CNUData accepts 2–12 digit search prefixes to narrow broad categories to the detailed codes present in source records. Accepted search lengths do not mean every country uses the same tariff-code length. Check the applicable tariff and product specifications for formal classification.

Do not combine incompatible units

Check whether weight is in kilograms or another unit, and whether quantity means pieces, sets or packages. Missing is not zero. An unusually small weight, high unit value or inconsistent description needs a source-field check before inclusion in an average.

Declared value is not a current quote

Before calculating a reference unit value, align currency, date window, specifications and quantity basis. Freight treatment and transaction terms may affect comparisons. If the preview is too small to support a price range, report that limitation rather than estimating a market price from it.

Common questions

Can prices be compared just because the HS code matches?

No. A shared category may contain different materials, specifications, uses and transaction terms. Narrow the records further.

Does the number of public samples measure market size?

No. A preview is a small subset of results, and its size is also affected by masking, deduplication and scope validation.

Sources and further checks

Product workflows and sample rules are documented by CNUData. For HS definitions and heading scope, see the World Customs Organization and check the applicable destination tariff for formal classification. References do not identify it as a supplier of our records.
